My name is Contessa T. Walker-Jackson, Founder & Owner of Teacher’s PETS Inc., a nonprofit organization that collaborates with the business community to provide financial, educational, and social support to children living in extreme economic and/or domestic hardship.
For those of you who may not be familiar with the philosophy supporting our work, we believe that children have the potential to experience extraordinary achievements if they are supported by the right education and a caring environment that nurtures their dreams, celebrates their talents and skills, and fosters their self-confidence and self-esteem.
‘Every Child, Every Chance, Every Day’ shapes the direction of our programs, our activities, our events, and our special initiatives.
This school year, we will implement the ‘Social & Emotional Learning (SEL)’ curriculum for students in grades 4-12 within the Huntsville, Limestone, and Madison Counties. With poverty rates reaching 18.3% in Huntsville and 16.8% in Athens, families can barely take care of their basic needs, much less focus on their children’s future and fragile feelings of self-worth.
We are currently seeking your support in raising $100,000 to cover expenses related to materials, software, laptops, staff, and personnel needed to ensure the success of our SEL curriculum.
Social and emotional learning (SEL) has been identified as an integral factor in human development. It allows young people and adults to acquire the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to develop healthy identities, manage emotions, maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions. The result? Inspired young people and adults who contribute positively to safe, healthy, and just communities.
According to the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL), SEL programs support five core competencies that can be applied in the classroom, at home, and in students’ communities:
- Social awareness;
- Relationship skills; and
- Making responsible decisions.
Studies also show that students who have participated in SEL programs demonstrate an 11% increase in their overall grades and better attendance.
We cannot ignore needs that are clearly in our sight. I am known as an intrepid entrepreneur who takes action when it’s most needed. Teacher’s PETS Inc. has allowed me to take that action!
It’s important to understand that Teacher’s PETS Inc. depends on donations and volunteers to ensure that our mission is carried out effectively and has a sustainable future.
The fulfillment of our $100,000 fundraising goal depends on you. Every donation brings us closer! If you have any questions about our organization, the work we do, or the SEL curriculum that we will be launching, please email us on the contact form in the chat forum.
